One of my passions and favourite hobbies is poetry, including the writing of, reading of, and performing of.
For those of you who are unfamiliar with the concept, Spoken Word Poetry is poetry like any other, but performed aloud for all to hear. I myself live in a city which is home to a sizable community dedicated to this unfortunately fringe art-form. Today, I would like to bring a taste of this amazing art to you, the fine patrons of the internet! So down below, I have linked to some of the best works of Spoken Word I’ve heard in the last little while. Enjoy!
General trigger warning, if you’re offended by profanity, you may want to proceed carefully.
#1, a piece by poet Jon Hedderwick, The Search for Dark Matter. This poem strikes deep into the heart of your deep thinking.
#2, by Shane Hawley, ( I couldn’t actually find the name for this poem), but it is an amazing representation of a classic cartoon, both in hilarious performance, and clever writing.
#3, Dear Canada, by Jaimie G. As a Canadian, this poem hit home for me, highlighting some of the issues found within my society.
#4, Aaron Simm’s Crosswords, a poem that packs a massive emotional punch, conveyed through finely crafted words.
#5, Rachel Rostad and her poem To J.K. Rowling, from Cho Chang, a brilliant take down of one of the most acclaimed book series made in recent decades.
and #6, RC Weslowski and his thoroughly, thoroughly entertaining poem.
I hope you enjoyed these as much as I did, perhaps even finding a new love for spoken word? I’d like to do some more of these posts, sharing great poems with you all. So if you have a favourite poem, written or spoken it doesn’t matter, leave a link to it in the comments below, I’d love to see it! -MC
